A Visit to Prem Dham Old Age Home
“Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional!" -
On 15th and 16th of May, 2024, 96 students of Grade 12 from Raja Ram Mohan Roy Academy visited Prem Dham Old Age Home in order to understand the care and support provided to the elderly. Prem Dham is a Home for such old people who are away from their own children, family and home. It is a place known for compassionate care, aiming to improve the quality of life for its residents through various programs and services.
The main objective of taking students to Prem Dham was to make them identify the challenges faced by the elderly, to interact with them and learn something from their experiences and to explore the opportunities for future collaboration and support.
The students received a warm welcome from the staff at Prem Dham. An orientation session was held to introduce the students with the history and mission of Prem Dham and students were also made aware of the daily activities of this old age home. They allowed the students to have a guided tour of the premises, including the living quarters, infirmary, common areas and their recreational spaces, giving them the chance to interact with residents and engaging them in various activities like singing old numbers, sharing stories and playing games to make them feel happy and contented. Though the residents were felicitated with every amenity they require but having young students among them was like an extravaganza for them. Students appreciated the commitment and compassion of the staff. They were inspired by their resilience and became sentimental.
The excursion to Prem Dham was an eye-opening experience for students. It has provided them with deeper understanding of the elderly and the care taken by the institution. The visit fostered a sense of empathy and a commitment to support Prem Dham in future through volunteer work, donations and advocacy. They have taken a pledge to organize Awareness Programs to educate the community
about the needs and contributions of Old People in the society.
