Teachers' workshop by Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship and education by publishing worldwide. It is the world’s largest press with the widest global presence and currently publishes several education, reference and academic publications every year.  

An interactive workshop was organized by Oxford University press for teachers of Raja Rammohan Roy Academy on 2nd July, 2022 in the school campus. The workshop was led by  Ms Swagata Chakraborty, an expert in conducting various competency building programs for mentoring the teachers and focused on key elements of National Education Policy 2020 and Post pandemic problems in classrooms.

Ms Swagata started the session with an introduction of NEP 2020 that is being implemented in Indian Classrooms focusing on its essence, vision and how it aims at making children truly global citizens. She also expressed the importance of using a holistic and multidisciplinary learning approach in classrooms that will help the learners adapt and reinvent themselves to the demands of the new hybrid work culture and dynamic socio- cultural changes.

Moving on, she discussed the four Cs of 21st century skills that are- Communication, Creativity, Collaboration and Critical thinking. These four skills provide a foundation for successful learning in school and also helps to ensure that students are successful inside and outside the classroom, in real-world scenarios in life and in their future workplace. She emphasised on integrating these skills in classroom teaching to prepare them for a bright future.

Ms Swagata then spoke about NEP 2020, its stages and features at length including NIPUN Bharat Mission, Experiential learning, integration of vocational skills, Competency based education and Art and Sport Integrated Education. Furthermore, Ms Swagata talked about the FLM, 360- degree report cards, multiple intelligence, discovery-based approach, integration of technology, creating subject links and stress-free assessments.

Ms Swagata then discussed the post pandemic challenges in classrooms like learning gaps, discipline issues, lack of patience, reduced attention span, poor writing skills and a lot more. She encouraged the teachers to follow child-centric approach and help the children make a successful transition from online learning to in-school learning. She also gave tips to make classroom teaching and learning more engaging and effective. The lecture session also included few fun-filled, educational activities for teachers which primarily focused on collaborative learning and mind-body coordination.

Ms Swagata concluded the session by emphasising on the challenges faced in Indian classrooms and encouraged the teachers to adopt teaching methodologies that can truly make a difference in classroom learning. The workshop was extremely enriching and informative and the teachers were filled with a new zeal to make the teaching- learning process a lot more effective and successful.
